What does "Daisy Chain Diagnosis" mean?

he DCD (Daisy Chain Diagnostics) is our intelligent, patented diagnostic system for a wide range of BERNSTEIN products. In a series connection of BERNSTEIN safety components, it provides you with comprehensive diagnostic data for each connected device.

Thanks to this wealth of information, the Daisy Chain Diagnostic system makes machines and systems more efficient. It helps to avoid downtimes by providing intelligent and early maintenance information.

What is meant by "DCD" or Daisy Chain Diagnosis?

The "DCD" is our specially developed "Daisy Chain Diagnostic System". With this system, a large amount of different diagnostic data can be read out for each integrated switch or sensor in a safety chain.

For example, it is possible to identify a cable break or short circuit via the DCD. Thanks to the clear designation of all components within the system, it is immediately clear where the problem is located. There is no need for a time-consuming search on the machine or system.

Of course, the status of a device can also be queried in general. In the case of the SRF safety sensor, for example, it is possible to see whether an actuator has been detected and therefore whether a monitored door is closed. Or whether an emergency stop SEU has been actuated.

The whole thing works not only for electronic safety components from BERNSTEIN, but also for almost all electromechanical variants. These can be easily integrated into the series connection via an intelligent adapter.

Which products are DCD-capable?

BERNSTEIN offers a wide range of compatible products for the daisy chain diagnostic system. Components that support the DCD system include sensors such as the SRF-5, the SEU emergency stop and the smart T-adapter.

To monitor the safety chain, we also offer safety relays and safety controllers with an integrated DCD function, such as the SCx and SCR P.

The DCD diagnostic data of each connected device is collected in one of these relays, a controller or in a stand-alone diagnostic device and can be output via various standardized interfaces. For example via

  • Ethernet-based fieldbus
    • Profinet
    • Ethernet/IP
    • EtherCat
    • Modbus/TCP
  • IO-Link
  • USB to a laptop or PC
  • NFC to a smartphone

What functions does the diagnostic system offer?

Different diagnostic information is available depending on the connected product. You can find an overview of this in our SMART Safety Flyer.

To simplify the assignment of information, it is possible to permanently assign a name and a descriptive text to each sensor, each safety chain and the machine. This allows the user to easily identify the corresponding sensor.

There is also an error memory that stores typical error data to simplify the search.

What are the advantages of Daisy Chain Diagnostics?

With the daisy chain diagnostics system, you have all data at a glance at all times. Comprehensive diagnostic data is available for every connected component. This means that

  • Identify sources of faults quickly and easily
  • Minimize service costs
  • Avoid downtimes
